Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I insure my horse for more than I purchased it tor?
A: Yes, as a general rule, the maximum amount of insurance allowable is the purchase price. However, we will take into account increases in value resulting from show/performance records, breeding records, training fees paid to date and any money earned. You may substantiate additional value by filing out the Substantiation of Value form.
Q: Will you consider offers to purchase or appraisals to substantiate value?
A: No, we do not accept appraisals or offers for purchase to constitute value.
Q: I bred and raised my horse. What is the most I can insure it for?
A: Horses that are bred and raised may be insured for 3 times the stud fee paid. lf there are additional show/performance records, breeding records, or training fees paid, those values will be considered, as well.
Q: What is the difference between an agreed value policy vs. a fair market value or actual cash value policies? What do you provide?
A: We provide agreed value policies. Agreed value means that the insurer will pay the value of the horse that is stated on the policy provided the information we receive is accurate. In a market value or actual cash value policy, the insurer pays only the value of the horse at the time of its death. lf the horse’s value has decreased due to an illness or injury, the insurer will pay the lesser value.
Q: Are “older” horses eligible for coverage?
A: Beginning at age 14, horse’s rates do change but are still eligible for coverage.
Q: Does my full mortality policy cover anything in addition to death and theft?
A: Emergency colic surgery coverage is also included on your policy for no additional fee up to the lesser of 50% of the horses agreed value limit of insurance or $3,000.
Q: Can I purchase major medical coverage as a stand-alone policy?
A: You must first purchase a mortality policy to be eligible for major medical coverage on your house. Major medical coverage is than added as an endorsement.
Q: Does major medical coverage provide for any preventative maintenance?
A: Preventative maintenance such as joint injections are not covered under optional major medical coverage.
Q: lf my horse has been treated for colic, can it be insured?
A: Typically there may be a waiting period to insure a horse that has been treated for colic. Otherwise, the company may cover the horse with an exclusion for colic and review the circumstances when the policy approaches renewal.
